On Sunday, 5 May 2019, the anniversary concert 50 Years of Studio Choir will take place at 20:00 at the Konzerthaus Berlin in the Great Hall with the participation of the South African tenor Siyabonga Maqungo.
Siyabonga Maqungo joined the ensemble of Theater Chemitz in the 2018/19 season, and has sung Alfred (“Die Fledermaus”), Tamino (“Fidelio”), Pang (“Turandot”) and Froh (“Rheingold”) among other roles. In autumn 2018 he made his debut at the Leipzig Opera House as Conte Almaviva in “Il barbiere di Siviglia” and was re-invited for the following season.
In April 2019 Siyabonga Maqungo makes his debut as David in “The Mastersingers of Nuremberg” at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin under the baton of Daniel Barenboim. In 2019 he has also been nominated for “Young Singer of the Year” at the International Opera Awards.
In 2018 he won 2nd Prize at the International Opera Competition in Portofino/Italy.
